Elliptigo St. George

Elliptigo has created the world’s first mobile elliptical bicycle. It combines the best of running, cycling, and the elliptical trainer to create a high performance workout that is fun outdoors. It has been featured by many popular companies like, Runner’s World, Popular Science, and Good Morning America.

Being an avid runner for many years, I have experienced my share of running pains, from runner’s knee to shin splints. I often had to take recovery days or push through the pain to get a great workout. After hearing about the Elliptigo I was skeptical at first but after my first test ride of the cycles, I’m a believer. The Elliptigo gives you a full cardio workout and the feeling of running, but without the aches and pains of running. It’s great for cross training and injured runners that still want to get that runner’s high without aggravating injuries. The cycles are fun, comfortable, and low impact on the body.  It’s a great way to get outdoors and get in shape without the high impact on your body.

Elliptigo St. George recently opened their first shop in May 2013. The owners are very friendly, and graciously let us take the Elliptigos out for a test ride on the Virgin River Paved Trail. They are located at 344 E. Sunland Dr. Visit their website for more information on the cycles and how to take your own test ride. I highly recommend to anyone looking for some fun in the sun, all while completing a great cardio workout. After you’ve completed your workout come back to a comfortable, clean room at our St. George, Utah hotel, The INN at St. George.

ESpokes the Electric Bicycle Distributor

Every day people around the world are trying to find new exciting ways to work out and relax. St George is now home to a relatively new concept of the electrically driven bicycle. ESpokes has been open for almost two months now and have specialized in the distribution of electric bicycles. We had the pleasure of getting to Ride a couple of the models that they sells.
The owner and the manager were super friendly and showed us two of their most popular models and let us take them out on the seven mile Virgin River Paved Biking Trail that was accessible from the parking lot. The models we rode were the Pedego Comfort Cruiser and the Strommer Elite Standard. These Bikes created a very unique cycling experience. You will have to note though that you get what you put in to it with these machines. The less you really on the electric power the more of a workout it will be.
The Comfort Cruiser is exactly what it sounds like. It was very relaxing and perfect for an easy going day. It is not peddle assisted meaning the power only engages when you open the throttle. The seat was very comfortable, and the peddling was much easier on knees such as my own when combined with the throttle. This bike is perfect for those people who just want to take a more relaxing ride around a town or have an injury that limits the use of joints in the ankle, knee and hip.
The Strommer Elite Standard was a bike built for a more serious rider. It has Throttle control and Peddle assisted power. This made it faster and it was built more like a mountain or street bike. We pushed the bike as fast as we could with the peddle assisted power and got the bike up to about 25 miles an hour on a relatively flat area. Passed about 22 miles an hour we were told that the peddle assist actually disengages making it just your own work. The Strommer Elite has a good Front suspension that made the ride easier at higher speeds.

Over all we were very satisfied with how the bikes felt and if I am ever in the market for that type of bicycle I will definitely come to St George and talk to ESpokes. Any time you are in St George you should check out ESpokes and go out for a ride. If you are staying in St George Come to The Inn at St George. We are bike friendly and centered in the down town historic district.

All over Saint George there are outstanding places to eat. Among these restaurants there are two that are small yet well known for their quality work. These restaurants are newer so their popularity is impressive on what they have built for them selves in the short amount of time their doors have been open. Dinosaur Discovery Site

Come check out the St George dinosaur discovery site. Started up 15 years ago, Dr. Sheldon Johnson discovered perfectly preserved dinosaur tracks in the sand stone on his property, now the location for the Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm. From that point on, thousands of tracks have been discovered in the surrounding area. The mission of the center is to help preserve these extremely important parts of history. The museum holds hundreds of fossils of foot prints, crustaceans, plants and bones. It has been rated as one of the number one dinosaur track sites in the world. This can be attributed to the tight sandstone and dry hot temperatures.

The Paleontologists and volunteers at the Dinosaur Discovery Site work every day to learn more about the fossils preserved there. Without their work much of the earth’s history would succumb to construction and animals in the area. Universities use this site every year to help expand their classes experience in the field of paleontology. Utah State’s Dr. Jim Kirkland actually found track ways that have reviled hundreds more tracks in the area help us understand paths that dinosaurs were taking.
You can visit the museum year round every day of the week except Saturday. They have tones of displays and activities for kids to learn what a paleontologist does. The museum is perfect for getting out of the sun for a couple hours and having some educational fun. Make sure put the Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm on your list of things to do while you are in St George or are visiting an area nearby.

Jacob Hamblin Home

Jacob Hamblin played a vital role in the settling of St. George. He was known as the “Indian peacemaker” as he was know for building good relationships with the natives of the area. Jacob Hamblin first came to Utah among the early pioneers in 1847 and settled in Tooele, Utah. It was here during a skirmish with the Native Americans, that his gun would not fire. This inspired him to stop the fighting with the natives, and to live among them and work with them. While in Tooele he built excellent relationships with the Native Americans and learned the Paiute and Ute languages. This led to him being called as a missionary by Brigham Young to serve as a mediator and peacemaker with the Native Americans of Southern Utah.

Upon Hamblin’s arrival to Southern Utah, he helped build a small home in Santa Clara, just a few miles upstream from St. George. But in 1862 that small home was washed away by flooding of the Santa Clara river. This led to the Hamblin home that still stands today. Jacob Hamblin built another home further up the hillside away from the river. It is a two story building built from adobe sandstone and ponderosa pine. The house is fronted by a large lawn with wine orchards. Tours of the home are free to the public and given by Mormon missionaries. Hours are from 9:00am to 5:00pm in the fall/winter months, and 9:00am to 7:00pm in the spring/summer months.
