Come check out the St George dinosaur discovery site.
Started up 15 years ago, Dr. Sheldon Johnson discovered perfectly preserved
dinosaur tracks in the sand stone on his property, now the location for the
Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm. From that point on, thousands of
tracks have been discovered in the surrounding area. The mission of the center
is to help preserve these extremely important parts of history. The museum
holds hundreds of fossils of foot prints, crustaceans, plants and bones. It has
been rated as one of the number one dinosaur track sites in the world. This can
be attributed to the tight sandstone and dry hot temperatures.
The Paleontologists and volunteers at the Dinosaur Discovery
Site work every day to learn more about the fossils preserved there. Without
their work much of the earth’s history would succumb to construction and
animals in the area. Universities use this site every year to help expand their
classes experience in the field of paleontology. Utah State’s Dr. Jim Kirkland
actually found track ways that have reviled hundreds more tracks in the area
help us understand paths that dinosaurs were taking.
You can visit the museum year round every day of the week
except Saturday. They have tones of displays and activities for kids to learn
what a paleontologist does. The museum is perfect for getting out of the sun
for a couple hours and having some educational fun. Make sure put the Dinosaur
Discovery Site at Johnson Farm on your list of things to do while you are in St
George or are visiting an area nearby.
